« SOA Takes Some of the Pain Out of Compliance | Main | Crossing the Chasm From JBOWS to SOA » January 17, 2007BPM is from Mars, SOA is from Venus How far along are we in the SOA-BPM dance? In a new blog post, Mike Stevens cuts right to the chase, and does a good job of summing up the opportunities and challenges arising at the intersection of these two mighty forces. The opportunity: "BPM’s promises – like cost and time savings as high as 70 percent – are hard for companies to ignore," Mike writes. BPM and SOA have similar philosophies -- "both are based on the idea of creating processes out of building blocks that can be easily linked together and easily modified down the road (because you can modify the process one block at a time)." The challenge: BPM is from Venus, SOA is from Mars. Or, more precisely, BPM advocates tend to be business managers, while SOA advocates tend to be IT managers. There's a historical mistrust between the two groups. Plus, there is often resistance to change wrought by BPM efforts.
